history: Sakuno grew up in a quiet, idyllic life with her parents in northern Japan. Nothing remarkable or strange ever seemed to happen. She had a normal Japanese girl’s life. Except, of course, for the fact that her grandmother was a powerful mutant.
She had an exceptionally close relationship with Ryuusaki Sumire, always asking questions. She learned all her grandmother could tell her about mutants and the conflicts they faced in society. And, when she was eleven, she learned that her grandmother had co-founded a school. A school just for mutants, where they could be safe and learn about their powers. Secretly, Sakuno began to long to be there, to be one of them.
And then, just days after her twelfth birthday, she suddenly vanished in her seat in the middle of dinner. She felt the same, but her parents couldn’t see her still sitting in her chair. There was a panic, and then another as she couldn’t figure out how to make herself visible again. Her grandmother was called, and it was suggested that Sakuno come to live with her at the Institute, as she was now a mutant. But Sakuno’s parents resisted the idea, unwilling to brand their only child with the stigma of what being a mutant entailed. Despite their daughter nearly begging to go, they kept her home. She had to be taken out of school two weeks later, unable to attend classes without disappearing from sight for hours at a time. Surprisingly, no one seemed to catch on. Since Sakuno was somewhat of a quiet follower to her friends, it was assumed she’d simply walked off somewhere. The school had begun to assume she was skipping classes.
It was decided then by her parents that she could be home-schooled. Since they were both teachers, to them it seemed like the best course. Always eager to learn, Sakuno blossomed intellectually under their tutelage, but always with a longing heart to be with others of her kind.
Then, at fifteen, they received a message from Hanamura Aoi, co-founder of the Ryuhana Institute. Ryuuzaki Sumire had been murdered, her body left on the grounds. Devastated by the loss, Sakuno vowed to continue her grandmother’s work and fulfill her wishes. After grieving for months, she took a stand and explained things to her parents, who eventually, and very reluctantly, made the arrangements for their daughter to leave for Tokyo.
Ryuuzaki Sakuno was now a student at Ryuhana.
Personality: Sakuno is a very clever, if very shy, young girl. She is a natural nurturer and will do anything in her power for a friend or someone in need. Because of her home schooling and confinement to her home, her social skills have suffered. Never a very outgoing or extroverted person, this has led her to be very self-conscience about any non-family members, and she develops a nervous stammer when speaking. She is however, very intelligent and is easy to engage in conversation if it involves learning or discussion about an academic issue. She loves to garden, having learned from her grandmother, and her favorite hobbies are reading and baking. Among her best academic subjects are languages, history and math. She will willingly take and complete whatever courses are assigned to her, but her actual level may be closer to college undergraduates than middle school or high school. Her worst subject is probably applied sciences, but that could be because her parents did not have an available lab in their home for her to practice in.
powers: Sakuno has the power of invisibility. She’s never learned how to control it thus far, and randomly will disappear out of sight whenever she’s experiencing surprise, fear, or stress. It’s a strain on her to stay visible, as her power has become comfortable in keeping her invisible. This has become her body’s default. Whatever touches her skin shares her invisibility, such as clothes and any items she might be carrying, though at the moment it must be touching a portion of her skin, so if she were to be carrying a book, only the small part her hand is touching would be invisible. The rest would appear to be a floating book with a portion of it missing. Once anything leaves her skin, it immediately becomes visible again.
Limitations: She cannot currently control any aspect of her power, except to force herself visible with great effort. Her invisibility does not shield her from objects or harm, or even other people. It only shields her from sight. Sakuno cannot make anything invisible without touching it, and cannot do it consciously at the moment. Nor does her power make her incorporeal. She remains a tangible being in her invisible state, and cannot pass through any object or matter.
Potential: Once she has gained sufficient control of her power, she will be able to become invisible and visible at will. Teammates and other people will be able to share her invisibility if she touches them, as will items and objects. Once mastered, there is a possibility that her power will allow her to bring invisible things into visibility, such as invisible inks, fingerprints and the like. She may also be able to sense when something is hidden, or missing from sight. At the very height of her control in the far future, she may be able to will another person or object invisible from a distance, as long as it retains any oils or epithelials from her skin.
